CLICK HERE to Download Brochure PDF The FishingThe San River in southeast Poland has some of the finest river trout and grayling fishing surviving in old Europe. Running off the border country between Ukraine, Slovakia and southeast Poland, and the enormous, pristine Bieszczady National Park, the San River and its many tributaries make up hundreds of kilometres of fishable waters. The San is densely populated by grayling, from the dams at Lake Solina all the way to the confluence with Poland's largest river, the Vistula. Grayling are also present in most of the tributaries of the River San, though notably in much smaller numbers In addition, wild Brown Trout abound everywhere and thrive even in the upland waters at the top of the San River catchment. Numerous ‘coarse’ fish species also exist on the River San system. Most notable are Barbel, Chub, Dace and the mysterious and beautiful Nase. All of these fish are regularly taken on the fly and provide excellent sport in their own right, always a pleasant addition to the outstanding grayling and trout fishing.
The Environment
Situated on the edge of a National Park of similar size to Wales, the San River and its surroundings are extraordinarily beautiful. There is no industry in this part of Poland, the majority of the land being either forested or locally farmed at a very sustainable level. There is some spectacular wild life in the area, most notably the last remaining herd of European bison, which roam the forests along with brown bears, wild boar, wolves, deer and European beavers. The AccommodationThere are a number of options as to where you may stay during your visit. Most of our guests stay at Riverside on the edge of the village of Lukawica, situated close to the National Park and on the banks of the San River in an outstanding fishing location for trout and grayling. The capacity for guests at this lodge is three twin rooms (two sharing) or three single rooms, offering accommodation for a maximum of six. All rooms provide en-suite facilities, the traditional cuisine is first class and there is a barbecue area and summer house at the end of the garden, overlooking the beautiful river.
For larger groups we accommodate guests in Bazyl Lodge in Miczkowce, set in a peaceful location, or a lodge in the village of Berezka, set amidst ancient spruces and offering a relaxing insight into rural Poland. You will be served typical Polish food from recipes proudly passed down through the generations to the present day owners and their families. Most evenings are spent outdoors, sitting around the fire under the covered barbecue area.
Our Testimonials
The San River "The San is deliverance. It is where you have dreamt about, why you took up fly-fishing, where you have journeyed towards and never really believed you would arrive. Well, here is journey’s end. You cannot go beyond, not in this life..." Jeremy Lucas, captain of the English Fly-fishing Team Best Times to Go
The best fly-fishing to be had is from mid-May until mid October, excluding August. July, September and October have been the very best periods over the last two years. Fly fishing is at its best over this period with the river flow being stable and the water very clear. Insect activity peaks in June and July, drops rather through the heat of August, but then picks up to huge proportions in September and October. Trips need to be booked well in advance for June and July. Overcrowding is avoided on San River. Our English and English-speaking guides on the San, know the river extremely well, and will take guests to water ranging from the well known sectors where appropriate or to recently discovered wilderness water close to Riverside Lodge. The numbers of grayling and trout that can be caught in most of the San during these months, particularly in special areas we have discovered is simply astonishing. Getting thereGuests are required to fly to Rzeszów in the South East of Poland. You will be met on arrival and driven to your accommodation by vehicle which is approximately 90 kms away.
